The drum circle is the rare activity that works identically for 20 people or 1,000. Every participant receives a djembe or percussion instrument, and a trained facilitator conducts the room through call-and-response rhythms, section splits, crescendos and silences. Within fifteen minutes people who have never touched a drum are holding down a groove with the entire company — no musical background required, no one on the sidelines.
Beneath the joy is a precise metaphor the facilitator makes explicit: sections listening to each other, individual rhythms serving a collective sound, the cost of one section rushing ahead. How much space does it need?
Roughly one square metre per person in concentric circles. A banquet hall that seats your group theatre-style will fit a drum circle.
Is it really viable for 1,000 people?
